Embarking on this project and exploring the artistry of motherhood has been a deeply personal and rewarding journey. The inspiration behind this endeavour stemmed from my own experiences as both a mother and an aspiring photographer, as well as a recognition of the societal narratives and stereotypes surrounding motherhood. It was a desire to challenge these preconceptions and delve into the multifaceted nature of maternal life that initially drew me to this theme.
Throughout the process, practice-led research played a pivotal role in shaping the direction of the project. From YouTube videos to a plethora of Google searches, to personal narratives, each source contributed to the richness of exploration undertaken, illuminating the nuances of this universal yet deeply personal journey.
Creatively, capturing the images required technical proficiency that I am still developing and also emotional resonance in order to frame and compose each scene. From the tender moments of morning rituals to the quiet solitude of the pottery studio, each image sought to convey the depth and complexity of maternal life. Creative strategies such as perspective shifts and careful composition were employed to immerse the viewer in the narrative, while technical hurdles provided valuable lessons in adaptation and problem-solving.
Editing played a crucial role in curating the final series of images, with each selection made with deliberate intention to enhance storytelling. The images chosen not only showcased the beauty and joy of motherhood but also challenged societal perceptions, inviting viewers to reconsider their assumptions and biases. I used LRC for all edits and created my own base preset to keep the series consistent. After applying the batch edit I went through each image, adjusted the white balance and exposure, and masked the subjects to smooth and brighten the skin, then cropped to capture the right balance within the composition.
A pivotal realization from this project was recognizing the profound strength and resilience embedded within the art of motherhood. Whether facing vulnerability or experiencing moments of pure joy, mothers navigate life’s intricacies with steadfast determination and boundless love.
This newfound understanding has deeply shifted my perspective on both motherhood and photography, amplifying my appreciation for storytelling’s ability to reveal timeless truths.
